Manual vs Electronic Ethanol Burners

Ok, Here’s the ‘down and dirty’… When it comes to safety, efficiency and convenience, I would have to say it’s time to retire the idea of a manual ethanol burner. Its an idea that had its time. Sure, its cheaper (in most cases…. but a manual ethanol fireplace from Ecosmartfire can set you back several thousand). And there’s something to be said for the simplicity of the design. But when you get right down to the mechanics and features of the burners themselves… “this dog don’t hunt”. Particularly when compared to an electronic remote controlled ethanol fireplace or burner such as those produced by aFire.

Let’s take a look at a Manual Ethanol Burner

This is truly a case of “what you see is what you get.” So what do you see? Well, I would have to say – “a big square stainless steel box” – and that’s exactly what you get for the most part. Design may vary slightly. But for all intents and purposes you just bought a fuel tank with a hole in the top. And in most cases you fuel the burner, light the burner, and watch the flames come up all out of that same hole in the top of the tank. The box itself is a large empty chamber designed to hold anywhere from .5 Liter to in some cases as much as 10 Liters of ethanol fireplace fuel. Some manufacturers have added baffles, aerating materials, or even batting materials designed to keep the fuel from sloshing about in the tank or easily spilling out.

I’m not saying this is a ‘bad thing’. I’m just reporting that it really isn’t a ‘good thing’ when you compare – as we do below:

Shortcomings Of A Manual Ethanol Burner

Safety – Sticking a lighter or match into the opening of a tank of ethanol fuel just doesn’t feel like the safest thing one can do. At room temperature ethanol puts out a “head” of vapors that are volatile. When lighting with a match or lighter, most times you experience a “POP” and a flash. Allow it to sit too long in a warm environment and that “POP” can be strong enough to be unsettling for most people. You definitely don’t want to have your face or hair down there. And most manufacturers recommend using a long neck lighter for that reason.

Flame Quality – In a manual ethanol burner, as the fuel is consumed, the fuel level drops lower and lower in the tank. Since you are directly burning the vapor coming off the fuel in the tank, your flame will follow that fuel down into the tank. So the lower the fuel level in the tank, the lower your flame will be in the tank. That creates several challenges:

Aesthetics – As the flame gets lower in the tank, you see less and less of it. As a result, the quality of your fire diminishes.

Air Quality – When ethanol is burned in a “complete combustion” the only exhaust created is CO2 and Water Vapor. Non-Toxic and not a dangerous mix. The problem begins when your flame becomes starved for Oxygen. Which will happen as the flame starts burning down inside the tank rather than at the top of the tank where more air is present. Depending on the burner design, you may begin to starve the flame causing an incomplete combustion. One of the by products being CO instead of CO2. And CO is toxic in large enough amounts.

Heat – Because the flame is burning inside the burner. It can cause an excessive build up of heat in the burner which if not properly insulated from surrounding materials can become dangerous. As well, you could potentially burn yourself on the hot burner. And a hot burner consumes fuel more rapidly leading to our next point…

Efficiency – Burning the vapor right off the top of a 5 Liter tank is just not the most efficient way to burn ethanol and can accelerate the amount of fuel consumed raising your cost to enjoy your fire.

Anatomy Of An Electronic Ethanol Burner:

Let’s examine an Electronic Ethanol Fireplace Burner like the BL-66 from aFire:

The First thing to take note of is the suspended ethanol combustion tray. It sits in the center at the top of the burner. This is where your flame is generated and stays – always at the top of the burner never inside the tank. The only access to the separate and sealed tank is thru the trap door at the right. The onboard electronics automatically lock this hatch when the fireplace is in operation or too hot to safely refuel. The ethanol fireplace fuel is actually pumped via an electric pump from the tank into the combustion tray at the top of the burner. And thanks to the electronic safety sensors, the level of fuel in the combustion tray is constantly monitored and regulated for an efficient, complete, and clean combustion. See the video below:

No match or lighter is required for the burner to ignite. You never have to put your hand or face close to the tank to ignite the fuel. It’s all handled conveniently by a one button remote control that will turn the burner on, and ignite the fuel using a ‘glo-plug’ similar to what is found in a diesel engine. You can light the fireplace from the convenience of your sofa, bed, or even bath.

So lets summarize:

Advantages Of An Electronic Ethanol Fireplace Burner

Safety – Fuel is in separate and sealed tank. Fuel is ignited via remote control. No need to put hand or face near the fuel source to ignite the flame.

Flame Quality – Because the fuel is pumped into the combustion tray at the top of the burner. The Flame is always visible and beautiful.

Air Quality – As there is always adequate Oxygen to generate a complete combustion, it’s the cleanest burning solution of any ethanol fireplace burner.

Heat – Because the flame sits at the very top of the burner, and heat rises by nature – the burner itself stays relatively cool. Even an hour or more into the burn, you can touch the burner surface without fear of getting burned. This allows for closer clearances during installation. And less need for expensive fire rated materials around the burner base.

Efficiency – The sensors that monitor the amount of fuel pumped into the combustion tray make the unit more fuel efficient. And the fact that the burner stays relatively cool leads to slower fuel consumption as the fuel is not heated in the tank.

BONUS! – you receive the added bonus of the convenience and safety that comes from the remote control option, and all the safety features afforded by the onboard electronics:

CO2 Monitor ( too much CO2 in room and unit automatically shuts off)

Fuel Level Sensors (prevents dangerous spills and overflow)

Temperature Sensors ( too hot and the unit shuts down automatically)

Seismometer (excellent for earthquake prone areas)

Accelerometer (similar to what’s in your iPhone – shuts unit off automatically if tipped)

Bottom Line: The convenience and safety features of an electronic ethanol fireplace burner must be considered in any purchase of an ethanol fireplace.

There are many choices when making the decision to include a fireplace in your home – wood, gas or ethanol fireplace. And there are many reasons people desire a fireplace for their home. Just think Romance, Comfort, and Community… mankind has been enthralled with fire since the beginning of time.

The advent of the Fireplace permitting us to bring fire into the home has allowed man to enjoy heat, light, and hot food going back to cave men. Now fast forward to current times, and while we still require heat, light and food – more modern technologies provide these requirements efficiently and conveniently. However the concept of a fireplace and our connection to fire remains.

Fire continues as a symbol of community and of romance. Sitting around the fireplace with friends, family or neighbors with a glass of your favorite wine, port or scotch is a picture synonymous with success. Laying on a sheepskin rug next to your fireplace with the one you love is synonymous of romance.

So while a fireplace is no longer a necessity within the home. It remains a highly desired amenity for many homeowners. For them the choice is less “fire or no fire?”, but rather what type of fire. And that decision boils down to either wood, gas or ethanol fireplaces.

WOOD FIREPLACE

Wood was the natural progression from primitive camp fires to a fireplace hearth within the home. It still carries with it the primordial connection to fire man first experienced. The smell, sound and warmth of a wood fire are its greatest benefits. The smell of a burning log is something ingrained in our very nature as a pleasant and comforting odor (as long as that burning wood is not the studs that make up our home). Just listen to a soundtrack of the crackle and pop of a fire and your brain immediately create a vision of fire in your mind – we all have that image stored away. And whether its at a ski lodge on the slopes of Colorado, or your living room on a cold winter’s night at home – who wouldn’t want to curl up with a book, or a lover, in front of a warm, crackling wood fire.

Frankly – me for one… With all the romance and history between man and wood fire, its just not convenient. First and foremost it’s dirty. A wood fire puts out smoke, soot, and ash. All of which require cleaning. Cleaning your Chimney, cleaning the fireplace, cleaning the log storage, and cleaning your house – from carrying firewood to the fireplace, or the ashes out to the trash, not to mention the smoke and soot off your walls and furniture – a wood fireplace is an overall dirty experience. Not to mention when the flue backs up…

Not only that, but the exhaust from a wood fire doesn’t burn clean. Wood fireplaces are becoming more regulated. California and now other communities have restricted wood fireplaces, some communities have even outright banned them. Not to mention that cutting, storing, and handling wood for the fire is a hassle. And what about those ‘creepy crawlys’ that tend to live in the wood pile. Frankly, no thanks… I’m pretty happy with the modernization of my home which frees me from the need to have an open wood fire in my home.

Alot of cost, and planning go into building a fireplace. You have to have properly designed Chimney, a strong foundation to support it, a clean out, and many other expensive and intrusive elements.

Next….

GAS FIREPLACE

Gas was the next natural choice for a fireplace. Its convenient, easy to turn on and light. Which can be made even more convenient with electronic starters that can turn on your fireplace with the flip of a switch, or push of a button. Gas is not a costly fuel to burn in a fireplace and if you have a gas line to your home, its already there in ample supply. So nothing to transport or carry into your home.

But alas, despite how hard we try to make a gas fire look natural by adding ceramic or cast steel “logs” or decorative colored glass and stone. It never gets close to the beauty of the flames coming from a natural wood fire. And the exhaust produces high levels of CO and other toxic fumes requiring the fireplace to be vented to the outside loosing alot of its heat value (much like a wood fireplace).

It’s expensive and requires a complicated build out to retrofit a gas fireplace. Gas lines need to be run, and ventilation needs to be added. If you live in an apartment, town house or rented home – forget it…

Ok, what choice is left?

ETHANOL FIREPLACE

Ethanol fireplace are a relatively new introduction and therefore most are fairly modern in appearance. Ethanol produces a lively natural looking flame. Much more beautiful than a gas flame, which is kind of like staring at your gas range.

Due to the nature of Ethanol, if you’re burning a high quality ethanol fireplace fuel such as SMARTFUEL™ – there is no toxic exhaust so you can burn these indoors without ventilation. Ethanol when burned in a complete combustion produces only CO2 and Water Vapor. Being ventless saves thousands in installation cost and makes an ethanol fireplace versatile. Easy to install anywhere. In fact, many are quite portable. So now an apartment dweller can even enjoy a fireplace in their home.

Quality, clean burning ethanol fireplace fuel such as SMARTFUEL™ is readily available online and becoming more affordable every day. Its comes in easy to handle quart or liter bottles for easy transport and storage. And with a brand like SMARTFUEL™ which has a flame arrestor in the bottle opening to prevent a flash explosion – its safer when refueling your fireplace.

So when we look at the advantages of an ethanol fireplace we find these top three:

Ethanol fireplace requires no flue or vent making it easy to install

Requires no gas lines or dirty wood storage

An ethanol fireplace is very clean – no smoke, no soot, no residue or odor

Up until now, most ethanol burners on the market were manual ethanol burners – basically a simple metal box that held the fuel, with a slot at the top for the flames to emit. You filled the box and lit the vapors by hand – sometimes unsettling as the fumes will light with a loud “pop” and a possible flash of flame. As the fire burns consuming the ethanol fuel, the flame sunk lower in the box until it was barely visible and finally extinguished. This caused the fire box to get exceedingly hot requiring more clearance, proper insulation, and a more complicated installation. And as it’s simply a metal box with no electronics – there can be no additional safety features such as monitors or sensors that ensure safe and proper operation of the manual ethanol fireplace.

Disadvantages of a manual ethanol burner:

No safety features included

Necessary to light the fuel by hand (sometimes a unsettling operation)

Fuel left in burner will evaporate (emitting an odor)

Inadequate oxygen flow can starve fire and create carbon monoxide

excessive heat build up in box due to flame inside

Enter the Remote Control Ethanol Fireplace from aFire…

aFire has taken the idea of an Ethanol Burner or Ethanol fireplace to new heights. By adding an electronic computer “brain” to the fireplace its creates an entirely different experience. First and foremost it adds superior safety monitoring to all aspects of the fireplace operation (fuel levels, spills, temperature, CO2 buildup, seismic motion, etc, etc, etc…). Next it assures a complete combustion of the fuel assuring an absolutely clean burn with no carbon dioxide or toxic exhaust. An aFire ethanol burner has a seperate and sealed tank for safety. Its electronic fuel pump delivers just the proper amount of ethanol into a combustion tray at the top of the burner. The flame stays at the very top of the burner, receiving proper amount of oxygen, and keeping the burner cool to the touch. This allows closer tolerances, less insulation and a simpler and less expensive installation. Not to mention, visible and more beautiful!

Lastly, the electronics in an aFire Remote controlled ethanol fireplaces allow us to operate the ethanol fireplace thru the use of a simple to use, one button remote control. And we include a port that allows you to easily integrate the ethanol fireplace to your home automation system.

So we finally get down to it. My top three reasons you should choose a Remote Controlled Ethanol Fireplace :

How nice would it be to walk into your home and find the lighting dimmed, a fire burning, and your favorite music track playing – Sound like a dream? Now aFire USA makes this possible with the convenience of an aFire remote control electronic fireplace.

All aFire ethanol fireplaces and ethanol burners are electronically controlled, and monitored continuously for safe operation. These same electronics allow your aFire fireplace to be controlled by a single button remote control that provides unprecedented convenience to your home.

Imagine relaxing on your sofa, working in your home office, watching your favorite movie in bed, or lounging in a warm tub – then reaching for the single button remote control, and with the touch of a button, igniting your modern and intelligent fireplace. Simple as that.

Unlike typical manual ethanol fireplaces you’ll find commonly sold on the internet – our remote controlled ethanol fireplaces provide superior safety and convenience.

No longer are you required to stick your hand inside the fireplace to light your fire only to be startled by a loud ‘POP’ as the vapors ignite close up. Simply sit back from the comfort of your sofa, bed or even bath and push one simple to operate button on your remote control and watch as your fire lights quickly, safely, and without any drama – just pure convenience.

Now as if that is not enough, aFire takes it one step further. We provide a “dry port” in each and every one of our ethanol burners to allow you to easily integrate your aFire fireplace into ANY home automation system you might have installed. Its quite simple… Once installed, you can schedule your fire to turn on just as you arrive home, and turn off just as you doze off to sleep. Instead of having one more remote control to track, you can operate your fireplace directly from a universal remote control or master control panel that allows control of all devices throughout your entire home. Or as a bonus – you can control your fireplace directly from any smartphone.

Try that with a standard manual ethanol fireplace

aFire represents Intelligent Technology. It’s both pretty AND smart! And while you will enjoy the convenience provided by your aFire Remote Controlled Ethanol Fireplace – our main goal is to ensure your safety:

Remove any danger associated with lighting a manual ethanol burner

Ensure complete combustion of the ethanol fuel – assuring no toxic exhaust

Constantly monitor your fireplace’s operation for safety

Automatic shut down if operating outside normal parameters

This is the intelligence of an aFire Remote Control Ethanol Fireplace.

With an aFire remote ethanol burner, installation is simple. No venting is required, and the unit is absolutely “plug and play” out of the box. Simply plug the unit into any household outlet, drop it into your housing (not provided), fill it with ethanol fireplace fuel and click the button on your remote control to light your first fire – all within minutes.

A manual ethanol fireplace or burner, and an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace both have a stainless steel top plate and fuel tank. That’s where their similarities end…

Ok, so let’s get right down to it…
The first reason you should pay more for an electronic ethanol fireplace is concern for Fireplace Safety. This reason alone should be enough to make the leap…

Reason #1 – SAFETY

Hands down, an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace is designed around the concept of SAFETY. Even features that might at first look seem like convenience – are primarily focused on your safety and those around you.

Ethanol has a low flash point (57ºF). That means at room temperature (72ºF) it’s already converting into ethanol vapor. So while you’re filling the 2.5 Liter or larger tank of your fireplace, ethanol fumes are already starting to build. That’s why, when you attempt to light your fireplace, requiring you to stick your hand inside the fireplace, you may experience a large “POP” as the vapors ignite. Probably not enough to injure you – however, it does startle most people, making the experience of lighting your fireplace unsettling.

A remote control ethanol fireplace on the other hand is an entirely different animal. Rather than directly burning the fuel present in its fully exposed storage tank, the fuel tank in an aFire electronic ethanol burner is separate from the combustion tray and sealed. During the ignition sequence, the medical grade fuel pump begins pumping a small amount of ethanol into the combustion tray located at the top of the burner. Almost immediately an electronic glow plug (similar to what might be used in a diesel car engine) glows red hot, gently igniting the fireplace – almost unnoticeably and without any drama, the flame simply appears. No need to stick your hand inside the fireplace, no unsettling “POP” as the ethanol vapors ignite. Just push the button on the included remote control, then just sit back and RELAX….

From this point forward there are no worries as the onboard electronic safety technologies built into the unit do their job. Which leads me to reason #2 for spending more for an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace – SAFETY.

Reason #2 – SAFETY

With a manual ethanol fireplace or burner, what you get is a metal box that you pour ethanol fireplace fuel into. The flames are created by burning vapors generated from the large amount of ethanol fuel stored in the exposed tank. That’s what you get, and nothing more – end of story.

But the onboard electronics present in an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner represent state of the art, advanced safety technology. These include:

Fuel Sensors: Monitor fuel levels in the tank, in the combustion tray, and most importantly – in the “spill tray” (the tray located directly below the combustion tray). In the rare event there is a malfunction and fuel were to overflow from the combustion tray into the spill tray below – these sensors are triggered, immediately shutting down the unit and eliminating danger before it can become a problem.

Temperature Sensors: Temperature sensors are present that monitor heat generated by the unit at the combustion tray, and the fuel tank. Should the unit begin to overheat for any reason – the sensors will trigger and the unit will shut down. It is then not possible to refuel or restart the unit until it cools to a safe temperature. It should be mentioned that due to the positioning of the combustion tray at the very top of the burner, the exposed top plate of the burner and the entire burner housing stay relatively cool to the touch. I was able to comfortably place my hand on the top plate of the burner even an hour into the burn. I don’t recommend trying that with a manual burner as the flame is actually burning inside the manual burner’s entire housing, so it tends to get excessively hot – requiring greater clearance and insulation.

CO2 Sensor: This is an essential safety component of every aFire remote control fireplace or ethanol burner. One not present on any manual ethanol fireplaces or ethanol inserts. Regardless of how clean the ethanol fuel burns, fire consumes oxygen (O2). If you deplete available oxygen in a room it creates a dangerous situation for people present in the room – as the oxygen level drops, carbon dioxide (CO2) levels naturally rise. As humans require O2, not CO2 in order to breathe, this presents a danger. This is especially true if the fireplace is located in the bedroom or bath. We have an article you can read addressing just this topic, read it here: Size Matters – How To Correctly Size Ethanol Fireplace To Your Room. Our CO2 sensor monitors the CO2 levels in the room. Should the level rise to a dangerous point – the sensor triggers, shutting down the unit, avoiding a dangerous situation.

Accelerometer: Much like your Apple iPhone which uses an accelerometer to navigate games, orient content on your screen, etc. – an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace or burner has an accelerometer that will trigger in the event of the fireplace being tipped over accidentally (potentially creating a spill of ethanol fireplace fuel). If triggered, the unit shuts down, stopping the pump from delivering more ethanol fuel into the combustion tray. As there is never more than a few centiliters of ethanol in the combustion tray – there is never a dangerous amount of exposed fuel present. Contrast that with a manual burner that if tipped over, has nothing to stop the entire 2.5 liters of ethanol from spilling onto the floor. If flame is present the results could be disastrous.

Seismometer: Maybe not as crucial, unless you live in an earthquake prone area, we have a seismometer built into every aFire burner. Should the unit be jarred severely by an earthquake or even a series of hard impacts to the unit, the seismometer triggers and the fireplace shuts down, eliminating any immediate danger.

All of this leads us to the third and final reason for paying more to own an Afire remote control ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner. Did I mention, SAFETY?

Reason #3 – SAFETY

A manual ethanol fireplace may cost less. It may be well built, and it may function as promised. But a manual ethanol fireplace represents “dumb” technology. Like the scarecrow in Wizard of Oz , it can only sing about a brain – because it has no “brain”.

On the other hand an aFire remote control ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner has a sophisticated CPU (in fact several) that act as a computer “brain” controlling all aspects of the operation of your ethanol fireplace. It controls the medical grade fuel pump that fills the combustion tray where the flame resides (at the top of the burner). It integrates with all the safety sensors listed above to ensure your unit is operating Safely, Efficiently, and as expected. And, it creates convenience by taking commands from the included one button remote that allows you to initiate or extinguish your fire from the convenience of your sofa, your bed, or your bath. It is truly Intelligent Technology. In fact, an aFire remote control fireplace or ethanol burner can be easily integrated into any home automation system you might already have installed in your home or business.

Obviously Safety, Convenience, and Intelligent Technology come with a price. At aFire we won’t ever apologize for that. We choose to use only the best quality components (pumps, sensors, CPUs) available – because, in the end, you can’t put a price on your safety, and the safety of those around you. That’s why we have been awarded CE, EMC and FCC certifications for all our ethanol fireplaces and ethanol burner inserts.

Ethanol fireplace fuel, when burned completely in a well designed ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner, is totally clean burning and requires no exterior ventilation.

Careful engineering makes these devices extremely versatile, cost effective, and easy to install. The only byproducts of burning ethanol fireplace fuel are small amounts of CO2 and water vapor. Our electronic ethanol fireplaces and burners are designed to ensure complete combustion of the ethanol fireplace fuel and provide the clean exhaust free from smoke, soot, and toxic fumes. Not so much the case with manual ethanol burners – but we’ll leave that discussion for another day….

While this topic (clean burning and complete combustion) is widely discussed within industry blogs and websites, what is not talked about as much is correctly sizing the ethanol burner to the room in which it will be used. As we all know from grade school science class, in order to maintain a burning flame a fire requires oxygen. Any open flame will, by its own nature consume oxygen from the room in which it is located. If it is a small device like a candle, no problem. But if it is a 48” or 72” ethanol fireplace burner, or even a smaller 26” ethanol burner – oxygen depletion in the room needs to be considered, and adequate combustion air needs to be supplied.

No matter how clean the burn, it is critically important that your burner be correctly sized to the room it will be used in to ensure adequate airflow and oxygen are available.

aFire North America has created a handy reference table for their electronic ethanol burners making it easy for you to determine the maximum sized ethanol burner or ethanol fireplace you can correctly install within the desired room location. Please see the table located below (which can be downloaded via the link at the bottom of this post):

So, as an example, let’s look at one of our most popular burners, the BL100 Remote Control Electronic Ethanol Burner that is 39” in length generating 21,000 BTU/Hr. It requires a room with a minimum volume of 3496 cubic feet. That would translate into a room approximately 18ft x 22ft with 9ft ceilings (3564 FT3). To assist you, we have built an easy-to-use room volume calculator on our website, you can access it here: VOLUME CALCULATOR FOR CUBIC FEET

Before you decide to purchase any ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner, you should be certain your room is large enough to handle the oxygen consumption of that particular unit. Bigger is not always better.

An added safety advantage of our aFire Remote Control Electronic Ethanol Burners is that they have a CO2 monitoring sensor built directly into the unit. This sensor (included on all aFire Electronic Ethanol Burners) measures the level of CO2 present in the room. If too much oxygen is depleted, then the CO2 level will rise triggering the sensor which will immediately shut down the unit, extinguishing the flame, and allowing the oxygen in the room to return back to a safe level. This is a feature not available on any manual fireplace burner on the market, and a good reason to consider an aFire electronic ethanol burner for your home.

It’s also important to choose a premium ethanol fireplace fuel to burn in your ethanol fireplace or ethanol burner. One that is absolutely clean burning emitting no smoke, soot, or toxic exhaust. We recommend you use only SMARTFUEL™ Ethanol fireplace fuel -The cleanest burning ethanol fuel on the market. It’s the first, and only ethanol fuel, to include a flame arrestor in the bottle opening ensuring there is no flash or explosion in the bottle when refueling. It’s the safest ethanol fuel you can buy for your fireplace.

aFire is dedicated to the safety and enjoyment of your fireplace experience when using our electronic ethanol fireplaces and ethanol fireplace burners. Our CO2 sensor is only one part of what makes our fireplaces superior to, and safer than manual ethanol fireplaces.
